Paul Landry - Hometown Parade
Today’s the day to celebrate with a parade. The bands are lined up, set to march with their shiny brass horns. All their uniforms look brand new. The horses’ bright headgear and colorful blankets are in place. The mayor’s open car is in showroom shape, and he smiles and waves at one and all along Main Street, U.S.A. Parade-goers line the street. Some prefer to watch from the bright and warm sunny side, while others like the shady side. The spirit of excitement peaks as the drum major raises his baton to signal the start of the rousing march. Some wave; others hum, sing along, or tap their feet to the beat of the drums. Still others are even moved to tears as their hearts swell with pride. Now and then you’ll see little boys marching along; imitating the real marchers in the band, trying to keep up with the beat of the patriotic songs the band is playing. It’s fun for them, and it’s good to see their young spirit in action. Even the dog joins in the fun. Once the parade goes by, the family picnics and festivities will begin and may continue on through the evening. There might even be a spectacular fireworks display, lighting up the night with a multi-colored collection of “sky flowers” that burst and twinkle in every color of the rainbow. I love a parade. - PL
