Bev Doolittle - Christmas Day
With typical resourcefulness, the mountain has found shelter, peace and warmth. He has unloaded his horse, gathered wood, made a fire and rigged a makeshift cooking stick for his meal of a local game bird. The great sequoia will take no harm from the small, cheerful blaze. If it gets really cold, he'll likely bring his horse right into the shelter of the tree-cave for the added comfort and warmth to both of them. He has even taken the time to cut down a small tree and decorate it with his meager possessions: a locket, a watch, an Indian shell necklace and a mirror. He is alone, but he's warm and will be well-fed. He expresses his spirit in his simple decorations. The soft snow provides the peace that goes with the season. But is it really Christmas? Without a calendar, this mountain mans celebration may be off by a week. Does it matter? Not if the celebration is in the heart! - BD
