The spotted owl is one of the rarest birds in North America. They should be on the endangered species list. Since they require large acreage of old growth lowland forest, their existence is inevitably threatened by clear-cut lumbering activities. To me, the spotted owl represents almost a mystical spirit of the great western forest, as it was when white man first arrived. It would be a pity if the last of the owls were to vanish in this generation. - RB
