Robert Bateman - Chief - American Bison
This series of prints on canvas were not produced by the giclée method, leading to many of the prints fading - you can tell if yours is faded because the bison may have a purplish hue. When Gallery One realized that this fading was occurring, it was arranged with Bob that one of the faded prints on canvas in the edition would be replaced by a print made by the giclée method. During one of Bob's appearances at Gallery One, he publicly destroyed the faded print #27 and personally hand signed and numbered the one giclée that Gallery One had produced to replace it. As a result, this giclée is one-of-a-kind.

The native nations of the great plains worked and lived with nature. The bison were their source of food, clothing and shelter. It seemed almost beyond belief that such vast herds could be exterminated in so short a time. I called this painting Chief for many reasons. This is obviously a dominant male rushing along, turning as he goes to confront a potential enemy. Many of the wise old aboriginal chiefs whose lives were linked to the bison were also fierce and powerful. - RB
