End of Summer is also known as Last Days of Summer. Days after moving, I drove by a farm that is through the woods behind my house. It had obviously been there for a long time and was, and still is, in need of some repair.
Today, ten years after doing this drawing, most of the property looks the same, just older or with parts missing, but it has all the character that I could ever ask for. It took several years for me to decide how to compose this in a way that would give it some life. The sparrow arrived in the same spot on the barn long enough and often enough that he ended up being the reason that I chose to start the drawing. The bird was also small enough not to take my eyes off the grain of the wood, and it had almost ended up as a drawing focusing on the spider web without a bird. But the very first time I saw him sitting with his beak casting that shadow, I was sold.
I’m a ‘thinker’ like many other artists…and often think so much about something before I start it that I feel like I’m done before ever touching the pencil tip to the paper. This is one drawing that I’m so relieved that I started, worked through and am proud to have as part of my portfolio. - RDJ
