"Some of my paintings tell stories, some focus on man's best friend and then there are those that capture the emotions of life," says John Weiss. "One of the jobs of an artist is to share with the world the moments which can only be described through their medium. Anticipation is one of those paintings. When the early morning temperatures sink lower than that of the water of Portage Lakes, the fog creates one of nature's most captivating moods. And it is out of this fog that the Black Labrador greets this pair of men in their bass boat." |

Brilliantly combining colors and textures, Weiss creates an image that conveys emotion and humanity. The pair of friends in this image may be familiar to collectors who have seen his series of Grady images, including Old Friends, Forever Friends and New Friends. In Autumn Friends, Weiss captures a man and his dog on a crisp autumn morning as they set out for another of life's adventures together as faithful friends. |

| "This painting reflects some of the things I enjoy. I love walking in snowstorms. The atmosphere, the sound and the beauty inspire me. I love to watch dogs in the snow, burrowing their noses and romping through the drifts. Watching children playing in the snow brings out the child in me. This painting is about exploring and playing in the snow." |

A Big Fish Story |

giclee canvas |

$595 |
A recurring theme in his paintings, says artist John Weiss, is that "strength, comfort and encouragement are always within reach." Nowhere is this more evident than in his newest painting, A Big Fish Story . Although the woods are dark and the night is cold, the figures in A Big Fish Story are bathed in light and warmth. Seated before a blazing fire, a fisherman recounts tales of his fishing prowess to an awed boy and his captivated beagle. The heat of the fire and the excitement of his grandfather's adventure have brought a flush to the boy's cheeks as he watches the legendary fish grow in size. Their companionship and love create a warmth that floods beyond the walls of the shelter, casting a golden glow on the snowy ground and surrounding woods. The light at the heart of A Big Fish Story draws the viewer in, and we find ourselves leaning closer to hear just how big that fish really was. J. W. |

In the dog show circuit, to "finish a champion" is to reach the pinnacle of winning, meaning that the dog has earned enough points to be given such a title. This German Shepherd is such a champ, with an ancient K-9 look of regal bearing and beauty. Originally bred at the start of the 20th century for herding and protection, the shepherd has proven to function in so many ways. From police dog to Rin Tin Tin to cherished best friend, John reminds us that every dog is indeed a champion. |

The dining room in a colonial bed & breakfast provided the inspiration this work. "When you walk into a room and the fire is lit," he says, "it's the first thing you notice. My next thought goes to who should be enjoying this fire."
"The challenge of this painting was placing a pair of black Labrador retrievers in such a dark area. The goal was to capture the glow of the fire, so, it was necessary for everything else in the composition to be rather muted. When you look into the shadows, you discover clues about your surroundings. The softness of the light enhances the coziness and character of the historic structure. I wanted to capture how walking into this room was like walking into a novel, an escape into another world." |

John Weiss has a gift for capturing the most precious moments, ones that resonate with us all. In From the Heart, the artist’s granddaughter innocently shares an ice cream cone with an old friend. The golden summer sunlight lends the companions a warm glow as they enjoy the simple pleasures life has brought them. From the Heart is truly a painting that will touch each of us. |

First bred as sporting dogs in the early 1800s, Golden Retrievers soon became favorites as pets and show dogs. Their friendly, obedient and loving disposition makes them easy to train. Their excellent noses make them reliable hunting dogs, capable of "winding" game from up to 50 yards away.
"The character and rugged beauty of Golden Retrievers is what led me to paint them," says John Weiss. "Since retrievers and water are a natural pair, what could be better than Golden Retrievers on a foggy shoreline?" |

"Going through reference material, I came across an image of a friend's Chocolate Labrador," John Weiss says. "They're amazing little creatures during their puppy stage, and I try to capture that special time in their lives by going for a natural look that makes you feel you can reach out and pet it." |

"Whether a small mixed terrier in an apartment, or a highly-trained working shepherd, dogs are instinctively protective and bent on being our guardians. I have always wanted to explore this theme in my artwork," says Weiss. "The other inspiration for this painting was one of my favorite escapes, the Marble Head Lighthouse itself. For over 30 years, this spot has been a place of comfort for me.
"On this particular evening I was waiting to study the effect of moonlight on the water. The sun had set and the land was quite dark, but the sky was still full of ambient light, as the stars and moon had yet to appear. I stood looking at this lighthouse that has flashed since 1821, guarding and directing the vessels plying the waters of Lake Erie. My thoughts went to Benejah Wolcott, the original lighthouse keeper, and what it must have been like on those lonely nights standing watch, guarding the guardian of the lakes.
"But today, who better to stand watch at the lighthouse than our loving protectors? Keeping his post ever vigilant, ever loyal, could there ever be a better lighthouse keeper than a dog?" |

"One of the real thrills of my year was the chance to take my dad fishing," John said when asked about the inspiration for this piece. "My father and I went down to Portage Lakes at Dusty's Marina, where I keep my boat, and I got him an old-fashioning fishing cane pole. We hadn't been fishing in years, and the sight of him fishing on the dock was an inspiration. We are so blessed to spend time with loved ones, and it was a real joy to spend this time with him. For the record, he caught more fish than I did." |

During the Civil War, dogs served as troop mascots, demonstrating bravery and loyalty in camp and on the battlefield. These mascots were an inspiration, bringing about unity while representing beloved pets at home. For soldiers, the act of nurturing offset boredom in camp, and the dogs would enjoy a charmed life lavished with affection. In Weiss' powerful image, this mascot provides much needed sanctuary to a young soldier who has undoubtedly witnessed the many horrors of war. |

"That's my old Black Lab Brant with my neighbor Grady," says John. "At the time I painted this memory piece, Grady was a very wise old gentleman of 91 and Brant was 12. My wish was to capture these dear old friends as a tribute. Winter seemed the perfect atmosphere, as both were in the winters of their lives. This serves as a nice reminder that even though life can be rough on anybody, an old friend will always see you through." |

"I was in a grassy field near my home with this pair of Black Labs," John says. "It was a wonderful morning, just right for a mood painting, as fog hung over the entire field. All was quiet until a noise finally caught the dogs' attention. They perked up and looked away, and in the process provided me with just the right pose. Each breed has that certain stance which suits it best. Labs should be attentive-looking, and that sudden distraction provided me with the perfect expression." |

Every home has it. a warm, congenial spot that beckons as evening falls. John found this perfect interior setting in a restored 19th-century farmhouse nestled among the rolling hills of Ohio. The hat and jacket, he says, belong to Grady, his elderly neighbor featured in an informal series of portraits; two of which, Old Friends and Forever Friends have sold out at the publisher. "You'll notice though," John says, "that Grady's cane isn't here; perhaps he's off preparing the evening meal for the two." |

"Strength, comfort and encouragement are always within reach," is the message behind John Weiss' art. One of the artist's favorite themes, companionship, is beautifully realized in his latest release. By carefully combining colors and composition, Weiss creates an image that perfectly conveys a tender moment in time which helps us evoke our own emotional connection. "People and their pets form an emotional bond that time and adversity can never breach," says John referring to the dog completing this circle of love. |
