The hush of an autumn morning is barely broken by the quiet rushing of water and the splashing steps of a bull and cow moose. “What drew me to this scene,” says Daniel Smith, “is its abstract quality, the division between the dark, still water of the background and the reflective bright water of the small cascade in the foreground. I always liked the peace and tranquility of running water, like watching a fire at night—it’s got that same mesmerizing quality.” |

| Attracted to predators and dangerous game, Smith has a particular affinity for big cats and bears, such as the male grizzly featured in The Big Dipper. When researching his subject, the artist's personal mission is to create a unique composition matching the perfect combination of subject, setting and action. "Whether standing or moving through their habitat, the different behaviors of the grizzly are fascinating to watch," Smith says of The Big Dipper." Although my initial intention wasn't to paint a grizzly fishing for salmon, the more I watched the subject in this action the more fascinating it became as the basis for a painting." |

The majestic elk, one of the largest mammals in North America, is revered in some cultures as a spiritual force. The bugling calls of males during the mating season can, like the howl of a gray wolf, resonate for several miles. This magnificent elk has sounded a challenge for all to hear. |

In prehistoric times bears were revered as gods. To this day, the power and magnificence of the bear stirs our imagination and emotions. Cool Runnings is a captivating portrait of an animal who has inspired both fear and fascination in mankind for millennia. Smith's realistic style brings every drop of water and each wet hair on the grizzly's face into sharp focus, making it clear that the artist has spent years studying these remarkable creatures.
Smith received the Artist of Distinction Award at the second annual Quest for the West Art Show and Sale at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. He has been invited to participate in the Autry National Center's prestigious Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale for the fifth year in a row, and Art of the West magazine recently dubbed him one of the "heirs apparent" to Western Wildlife master Robert Kuhn. |

| Humans have long been fascinated by the mystery of the raven. Throughout Europe, Asia and North America, early peoples told stories of raven gods and their deeds. This raven sits alone on a gnarled branch, staring vigilantly into the mountain mist. His eyes scan the sky, watching for predator, prey or anything in between. Like all of Daniel Smith's realistic wildlife scenes, Mountain Sentinel places the viewer instantly in the wilderness habitat of his subject. - D.S. |

| This fall, at Indianapolis' Eitlejorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Daniel Smith will have his first one-man museum show. The honor is part of the Artist of Distinction award from the museum's 2007 Quest for the West Art Show and Sale.
It has been a year of distinction for Smith. He was one of ten artists featured in Settlers West's “Stars Over Tucson” this past March. His display, which showcased A Nose for Honey, sold out on opening night. With their
excellent brush work and light-hearted composition, Smith's lifelike images have become instant collector favorites.
“Bears have an uncanny sense of smell,” says Daniel. “Being omnivorous, they get most of their nutrients from nuts, berries and fish (which are not very filling) so they spend most of their lives searching for food. This grizzly bear has been fortunate enough to find a cache of honey within reach.” |

The mountain lion was nearly annihilated at the beginning of the 20th century by ranchers and hunters. Since the 1960s, however, the mountain lion population has rebounded thanks to new protective laws. In artist Daniel Smith's home state of Montana, the growing number of cougars has created some overlap in territory between the wild and civilization. A great cat sitting at the edge of a driveway is a sight that has become all too familiar to many residents, including Daniel Smith, who recently looked up into a tree on his property to find a cougar wrapped around the upper branches like an overgrown kitten.
The mountain lion in Smith's newest painting, however, is in his glory in the wild. Smith's detailed style captures the curl of the cougar's tail and the tension in his muscles so realistically that you may feel the need to slowly back away from this cat On the Edge. |

| Acclaimed for his depictions of the natural world, Daniel Smith is one of the country's foremost wildlife artists. The surroundings in his native southwest Montana continue to inspire him and provide him with the opportunity to paint from personal experience, which gives his work both striking detail and stirring realism. Smith has admitted an attraction to predators and dangerous game and his affinity for great bears is apparent in Retreat from the Heat . As the harsh morning sun heats the earth, the only cool surface available to this magnificent grizzly bear is a rushing stream. The wet fur on his belly and legs attest to the bear's love of the water as he plunges in with his massive front paws. The water itself looks so inviting and the sun, so harsh, that you may have to stop yourself from attempting to share this grizzly's Retreat from the Heat . |

The spirit that makes a creature truly wild soars in Sovereign Repose. For Daniel Smith to portray such an intimate understanding of this raptor's nature attests to the time he spends in its natural habitat. The bald eagle (haliaeetus leucocephalus), is found over most of North America, from Alaska and Canada to northern Mexico. In 1782 the Continental Congress officially adopted the current design for the Great Seal of the United States, emboldened with a bald eagle grasping arrows and an olive branch with its talons. While on the brink of extinction late in the 20th century, today the population of the great bird has stabilized, ensuring that this living embodiment of freedom continues its reign. |

The lion, Panthera leo, is one of nature's most perfect creatures. In the lion, one may find strength, grace, intelligence, beauty, nobility and utter and exquisite laziness. The lion is so convincing in his perfection that he has managed to become crowned "King of the Jungle," when in fact lions can currently be found in the wild only on the grasslands. Daniel Smith has perfectly captured the glorious, arrogant perfection of the lion in his newest painting, The Sublime . Smith has captured an idyllic moment, where the greatness of the animal kingdom meets with the shining light of the heavens. |

Of all the great animals of North America, none symbolizes the American West more than the buffalo. As a source of food and clothing for both Native Americans and settlers, the buffalo supplied our growing nation with the raw materials to successfully become the country we are today. Sadly, they were hunted almost to extinction as human settlements grew and expanded further westward in the nineteenth century. Strenuous human effort to protect and re-introduce the wild buffalo over the last hundred years have proven successful, but the sight of a thundering herd-the breathtaking sight that greeted so many early Americans-remains rare indeed. The great herds that once roamed the plains have dwindled, but their place in the history and mythology of our nation is eternal.
Now wildlife artist Daniel Smith brings his spectacular vision to the American Buffalo. Thunder and Dust , his newest Greenwich Workshop Fine Art Limited Edition, celebrates the majesty and power of these magnificent animals. The original painting, Smith's entry in this year's Masters of the American West Exhibition and Sale, was priced at $29,000, but you can bring home the heart of the West for as little as $1250. |
