Many of my nostalgic childhood memories have as their backdrop the posts and rails of my grandparents' front porch. That porch symbolized the security of home and family, where wisdom passed from one generation to the next. Years later, those simple lessons learned on that old front porch continue to add balance, perspective and enjoyment to my life. - G. O. |

| A rough and tumble tomboy with sneakers on her feet,

Her prowess on the playground has created no small stir,
In fact, the star player of the game was not a him - but her!
She hits and throws and, the story goes, her fast ball can't be seen,
But beneath the grit and all the grime can be found a little queen.
The tomboy goes when she changes her clothes and lays her leather aside,
When the sneakers come off and the slippers go on, with laces carefully tied.
Then the pitcher does a pirouette that's like a curve ball she has thrown us,
And with dancing shoes and graceful moves, a much softer side is shown us.

| One of Ohio's favorite landmarks, the Fairport Harbor Lighthouse and Marine Museum was originally built in 1825 from a Jonathan Goldsmith design. The Lighthouse served as a beacon for early northern Ohio settlers and is even credited with "lighting the way" for Joseph Smith, who established the Mormon Church in Kirtland. |

We certainly exalted it when we called it a "tree house" - that bunch of boards from Grandpa's scrap pile. It wasn't much more than a perch to ponder on, but to us it was our towering fortress, a lookout post over the kingdom which belongs to youth. Within the branches of that tree we felt invisible to earthbound eyes, the sun felt warm and calming, and loud-mouthed boys were quiet up there in our fraternity tree. - G. O. |
