STEPHEN
LYMAN - LIMITED EDITIONS - R-Z
Special note: Stephen
Lyman died tragically on April 16, 1996 in a hiking accident
in the place he loved most outside of his own home: Yosemite
National Park. His love of the world and his ability
to communicate it to us through his paintings and photographs
will inspire us for the rest of our lives.

"All of my paintings have their origins in my experience and perception of beauty in the wilderness," said Stephen Lyman. His art allows the viewer to travel deep into the woods, find serenity at the water’s edge, climb mountains and be completely at home in the true world — the world of the wilderness. “Red tailed hawks like to perch on telephone and fence poles and watch for rabbits and mice in the long grasses,” Lyman said of The Raptor’s Watch.“I wanted to capture this particular hawk on its vigil because of the textures in the scene — in the leaves of the blackberry bush, the moss lichen growing on the fence post and the plowed field in the background.” |

Return of the Falcon |

Peregrine - "the wanderer" - has returned to Yosemite. Master of the air in grace, agility and speed, the peregrine falcon has been described as the perfect flying machine. Its spectacular aerial displays and power dives at prey, at times exceeding 200 miles per hour, has make it a favorite with falconers for centuries. After an absence of nearly forty years, the peregrine falcon is again nesting atop Yosemite's steep-sided cliffs and canyons. Augmentation of their nests by humans is helping them to return in numbers, but we must work to create and preserve an environment where these magnificent birds can once again fly free from the adverse impact of man. In this painting I have attempted to convey the immense space of Yosemite Valley with Half Dome bathed in the fleeting, golden light of sunset. A peregrine falcon, waiting for prey to fly within range of his extraordinarily keen eyesight, is perched on precipitous cliffs, ready to launch into the air. - S. L. |

This if the first time I've used the format of a long horizontal. It lends itself to a dramatic landscape, creating a sweeping feeling which enhances the action of the geese landing. Geese are wonderfully comical and awkward when they land. They're wobbling with their wings, their feet are out, and it's almost as if they are out of control until they get to the water and then they are suddenly graceful. This painting is like a "frame by frame" shot of one goose landing on the river. But with a group, you can see the whole sequence coming in onto the water. The reflections underneath the geese were a real challenge. In every piece I try to do something different. Here, I've combined a number of things: water, reflection, light, landscape, and wildlife. - S. L. |

Surrounded by trees and foliage native to the Alaskan wilderness, a timber wolf stops suddenly to survey his kingdom. From beyond the hill, a smell, sight or sound has put him on the alert. Maybe it's just the whistling of the wind. Maybe it's another wolf. It could even be a grizzly bear. As trees fade into fog and snow falls steadily, you can decide. - S.L. |

The Snowy Owl is accustomed to the wide open vistas of the northern tundra. When hunting in the southern Canadian provinces during the winter months, it still prefers low perches that provide clear open views. Here a female silently surveys the area - a Queen upon her throne of twisted wood. - S.L. |

This work was a Lyman favorite. He liked that it was a departure from his wide open landscapes. He was a quiet man who loved the serenity of nature and Far Eastern simplicity of design and focus. This is also seen in earlier prints like "Morning Solitude." This image shows off autumnal aesthetics of color and texture — the bright blue Steller jays in contrast with the fiery orange of fall leaves and the dark maple boughs.
Artist Stephen Lyman was well known for his epic landscape paintings featuring mountain ranges, broad rivers and valleys, and often the wildlife that make their home in each terrain. Steller Autumn is an intimate portrait of one landscape (a tree) and its inhabitants, Steller's blue jays. In order to capture the intricate details of the scene, Stephen concentrated on one area of a maple tree. The Steller's blue jays are seated contentedly among the glowing maple leaves. As the dark boughs spread upward and outward, the golden leaves and a handful of sky-blue birds remain, imbuing the painting with a sense of closeness and comfort. Artist Stephen Lyman specialized in painting the most elusive moments in nature and no piece better showcases his abilities than Steller Autumn. S. L.

One of the great gifts of Lyman's life was sharing his intimate knowledge of Yosemite, which he literally knew from top to bottom. In Ahwahnee -The Deep Grassy Valley, he guides us through the verdant valley floor. In Dance of Cloud and Cliff, he lifts us up to majestic Half Dome, bathed in setting sunlight. With his classic, monumental landscape Storm Over Tenaya Canyon, we soar higher still. The artist often included wildlife pieces and sometimes suggested a narrative, but this pure landscape is a deliberate departure — almost certainly inspired by the dramatic images of Albert Bierstadt and other 19th century painters of the west. |

These beautiful mountains are located in Oregon, and are a Lyman family favorite. Steve's parents brought Steve, his sister Shauna and his brother Scott there often. Steve grew fond of this quiet and serene place, and soon after he met his wife Andrea he brought her to the Wallowas to share their beauty with her. Andrea loves this place as much as Steve did, and has fond memories of sharing this special place with him. |

Of all different kinds of light in the wilderness, lightning may be the one you would prefer not to see close-up. But it would be magnificent if you could witness lightning's beauty and power for yourself without the danger. Now you can, because that was my inspiration for "Thunderbolt". In this image, the tree is acting as a lightning rod. The current travels through part of the tree's tissue. The moisture in that layer is instantly turned to steam, and the tree's bark blows off in an impressive explosion. Lightning is terrifically challenging to paint. I've seen this phenomenon from a distance while backpacking, but to actually capture it took a lot of research and imagination. Lightning is dramatic and dangerous, but now you can get close to it and appreciate it, without being in danger. - S.L. |

A flash of blue accents the soft neutral tones of a landscape of fresh snow. The Blue Jay pauses on a snow covered branch. Now where did he hide all those thousands of acorns for his winter meals? Some he will never see again because they have been pilfered by squirrels. Others will never be retrieved, eventually sprouting into new trees. In fact, the Blue Jay is probably responsible for the extraordinarily quick spread of oaks back north after the Ice Age. This handsome bird's raucus call alarms the whole forest to the approach of an intruder. - S. L. |

Warmed by the View sparks the most popular question from collectors, "Who would build a campfire that close to a cliff?" Artist Stephen Lyman answered this question quite simply, "I did." An avid adventurer, Lyman lived his paintings and Warmed by the View is no exception. Never one to pick level, comfortable camp sites, Stephen preferred more dramatic, unique locations where he could enjoy 360 degrees of landscape view.
It's difficult to name one signature piece with artists as talented and prolific as Stephen. Certainly his series of campfire paintings qualify and Warmed by the View is one of the crowning jewels in that series. This cliff edge above Yosemite Falls is a typical camping spot for Stephen. "Fortunately," he would say, "it's hard to go sleepwalking when zipped in a sleeping bag." |

| "This painting was inspired by the scene at the top of Yosemite Falls on the north rim of Yosemite Valley," wrote artist and explorer Stephen Lyman. "There, one has a panoramic view of Yosemite Point, Mount Clark, Gray Peak, Red Peak, Mount Starr King, Glacier Point, Sentinel Dome and Sentinel Rock." If you look closely at this beautiful Greenwich Workshop SmallWorksT Limited Edition, you can just make out three figures atop a ridge on the left-the artist, his wife and a close friend. |
