A recent visit to Riga, Latvia, featured a chance to work with young orphans who knew nothing about art or artists. I was enchanted by the passion and purity of their openness to art.
Later, I set up my easel in the cobblestone square facing the ancient "Dome Cathedral." I realized then that I bring the same passion to my plein air painting that the orphans showed me. I truly reconnected with my inner child. - T. K. |

I wish that every family could be as fortunate as mine has been in finding havens of beauty and tranquility.
The serene seaside village of Capitola, just north of Monterey has become a favorite weekend retreat for the Kinkade family. Recently, I set up my easel under a beach umbrella and began to paint the romantic expanse of sand and water and sky, drawing a crowd of curious
onlookers as I worked. The ancient wooden pier becomes the centerpiece of luminous ocean waters painted gold by the setting sun; Nanette and I have often joined the couples who love to stroll the pier, hand-in-hand, just at dusk.
As the brisk autumn afternoon faded slowly to evening, the setting sun touched the wispy clouds and the wave tossed sea with shades of gold and pink. Tidal pools become silvery mirrors reflecting the glory of this Capitola Sunset.
Charming Victorian homes line the hillside; rustic shacks perch atop the pier. The intriguing octagonal restaurant with its gleaming windows serves some tasty fare; indeed, my family dined in comfort that evening as I put the finishing touches on my plein-air celebration of our romantic Capitola Sunset hideaway. Chatham Light |

| Chatham Light , like so many lighthouses, stands on a desolate, hostile shore, that one might almost be tempted to describe as "God forsaken." But the message of lighthouses is really quite different - it is that, regardless of appearances, no place is truly "God forsaken." God's guiding hand is everywhere visible, and His message of hope and consolation applies with greatest force when the storm rages around us.

| I frequently feel inspired to pass on some of what I have learned to younger artists and collectors. Recently I did just that at Colton Hall in Monterey. The 150 year old town hall seemed a suitable place for such a gathering. The link between past and present comes dramatically alive in this place.
I painted Colton Hall, Monterey on a splendid day when a brilliant afternoon sun dappled the vast lawn with patches of light and shade. It provided me a wonderful occasion to demonstrate my techniques for capturing light to a large and eager audience.

| The decades-long love affair between the Kinkade family and the British Isles continues with Edinburgh, Scotland, my plein air portrayal of a city of almost magical charm. I've never had so strong a sense of the living Middle Ages as I did when I sat before my easel overlooking Edinburgh's famed Old Town. The towers and turrets of the magnificent castle and the spires of churches contrast with the horizontal sweep of colonnades along the royal mile. The architecture reflects and amplifies the grandeur of the rugged hillsides and the lush, sweeping parkway.

| When I visited this great port-of-entry for some 22 million immigrants, I was profoundly moved by a new appreciation for the powerful promise of American freedom. The dream of a better life for themselves and their families prompted so many to attempt the perilous voyage. Seasick and heartsick, packed into the holds of overcrowded ships, our parents and grandparents bid farewell to the world they had known and headed bravely into an unknowable future.
For them, Ellis Island, neighboring The Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, represented the commencement of that future.

Fisherman's Wharf, Marina |
 |
canvas |
signed and numbered |
18" x 24" |
$560 |
| Some of my Plein-Air paintings are, if I can put it this way, a matter of "love at first sight." I happen upon a scene, am entranced by it, and begin to paint in a kind of creative fever.
My Fisherman's Wharf, Marina is another matter altogether. I know the ins and outs of this picturesque harbor as well as I know any place in the world. I've visited it since I was a boy. I know the feel of its salt spray, the colorful departure and return of the fishing fleet, the mix of aromas provided by its world-famous restaurants, its panoramic view of the bay.
I have detailed San Francisco landscapes in a number of studio pieces. The impulse that moved me to set up my easel and create Fisherman's Wharf, Marina in just a couple of hours was different. All too often, the weather in San Francisco is windswept and foggy. This was a dazzling day. A brilliant sun shimmered on waters that rivaled the sky in the intensity of their blue. The magnificent span of the Golden Gate Bridge was etched on the horizon; the distant shores of the bay stood out clearly.
Picturesque little schooners were tied up at the piers. Fisherman's Wharf, Marina didn't look like a tourist attraction that day. It was, instead, the perfect image of a fishing harbor, just as you see it in the painting.

| In Hawaii there's a special quality to the light, as if the water all around somehow drenches the air mist. The puffy white clouds that ride the brisk breeze remind me of sailing ships hurrying off to distant ports on that celestial sea. Perhaps that's why Front Street, Lahaina seems to me to express the spirit of these exotic islands.

Grand Canyon |

The Kinkade family recently explored the desert Southwest, in an oversized RV equipped to be a rolling art studio. It has long been my ambition to paint The Grand Canyon , truly a place where mortal man stands on the edge of eternity. The ever-changing moods of the canyon surprised me. The sun alternately brings formations into sharp focus, and then casts them into shade. As I painted, a burst of sunlight struck the foreground cliff; I worked hurriedly to render the dramatic effect. My Grand Canyon captures just one of the many expressions that passes over this sculpture from the hand of God. - T. K.

The Hotel Del Coronado - one of the grand dames of stately nineteenth century wooden hotels - is haunted by memories of gentlemen in top hats strolling the grounds, with ladies in long evening gowns on their arms. Traditions such as high tea, and memorable Thanksgiving and New Years celebrations, hearken back to that fashionable era.
I set up my easel in the sand, and began to paint just as the morning fog lifted and golden light broke through, bathing the dignified old hotel in a radiance that seemed to banish the years. - T. K.

The impressionistic technique of Island Afternoon, Greece allowed me to explore the interplay of color on this sun-drenched hill. The sun was high in the sky, the Aegean was a radiant sapphire blue. There are places I visit that feel like dreams come true. When I visited charming Cape May, New Jersey - I felt as if I'd stepped into one of my own romantic canvases. I knew I had to paint Jackson Street, Cape May.
As I set up my easel, a coastal fog rolled in, casting the ornate Victorian buildings in a soft, shimmering light. Street and house lights came on; their reflections glistened in the mirror surface of the damp streets. Umbrellas and lavish flowers opened. Jackson Street, Cape May is a memorable image of the many charms of small town life in America.

La Jolla Cove |

La Jolla Cove reminds me that my whole artistic adventure hasn’t really taken so very long. This romantic vista brings me back over twenty-five years, when Nanette and I used to travel to my very first few galleries in a pick-up truck complete with camper shell which doubled as a motel room. One of my first major galleries was in La Jolla, the picturesque home of such famous writers as Ted Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss). When we went to La Jolla for a show, or simply to present new work, we most often camped at the very romantic Cove. I promised myself then that I’d return with my paints and canvas, and now I have. La Jolla Cove presents a very romantic sunset. Radiant light bathes the clouds and paints the sea a luminous turquoise; it gilds the smooth rocks with a silver sheen. The graceful palms are the same ones that saluted Nanette and I twenty-five years ago. - T. K. |

I painted Lake Arrowhead on a brisk fall afternoon when the air was crystal clear and the sky a dazzling blue. The lake is a sapphire gem set among rugged hills; the deep blue-green of pine and spruce contrasts with the gold of scattered maples in their autumn glory
The Lake Arrowhead Lodge is a classic mountain inn that is every bit as comfortable as it looks. Its red gabled roof mirrors the contours of the surrounding hills, while the historic paddle wheeler bobs at the pier as it awaits visitors to enjoy the lake tour. - T. K. |

When I took my family to Tahoe recently, I neglected to bring my art supplies. As soon as I caught a breathtaking glimpse of the radiant afternoon light on the sapphire jewel of a lake, I realized what a mistake I'd made. I scoured the town for an art supply store, and bought several tubes of color.
I hurriedly set up my easel on the south shore of the lake and set to work. I didn't want to lose that luminous light, and I think the passion and urgency with which I worked shows itself in the bold, energetic brushwork that brings Lake Tahoe Shoreline, Winter to life. - T. K.

In the elevated, clear mountain air of "Los Gatos," the fogs of nearby San Francisco are banished; this is a city blessed by sunshine, a painter's paradise of radiant greens and lavish blossoms.
I recently got the chance to paint "Los Gatos." It was a bright Saturday morning; tourists and townsfolk alike indulged in a favorite weekend pass-time - strolling the avenues and gathering at such favored local breakfast spots as Gilley's Coffee Shoppe. Not many make Los Gatos their home - perhaps through this painting many who live elsewhere can bring the beauty of Los Gatos home with them.

When my family moved near to the picturesque bay area town of Los Gatos, I was delighted to discover a high school that fully measures up to my nostalgic memories of school days. I wanted to capture the drama of dawn light, when the glorious old school building seems to shimmer with anticipation. With its sweeping lawns and cobbled walkways, flanked by palm trees, stately oaks, and mighty redwoods, Los Gatos High School is a California landmark that represents, for its students, the timeless value of education.

I've grown to understand that one
of the joyful
aspects of art can be the ability to contribute a
touch of beauty to our celebrations of the
milestones in our lives. That's why, when the
University of Missouri at Columbia - Majestic
Mizzou, the first public university on the banks
of the Mississippi - asked me to help them
celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their celebrated
Museum of Art and Archaeology, I was happy to
comply. The six Ionic columns that are the focus
of The Majesty of Mizzou are original to the campus, proud symbols of the great university. - T. K. |
