Monterey's famed Cannery Row is undergoing a renaissance. No longer the bustling sardine fishing center immortalized by John Steinbeck; it entices visitors today with its many fine shops and boutiques, including a Thomas Kinkade Gallery.
As I continue my odyssey as an artist, I find myself drawn to the historic seaside villages of California. One of the reasons, I believe, is that the coastal air, saturated with mist, lays down a mirror-like film of moisture on streets and walkways. Cannery Row Sunset created to celebrate Cannery Row's 50th Anniversary makes full use of the reflective play of light and color, not only on the busy streets but upon the luminous surface of Monterey Bay.
As I worked, urged on by crowds of enthusiastic collectors, a friend drove up with his historic '53 Chevy Bel Air, which takes us back to the glory days of Cannery Row. Many of the colorful storefronts also date back to the era immortalized in Steinbeck's novels.
A historic Cannery Row walkway bridge crosses the thoroughfare and in the distance we see hints of the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. Sunset enriches the vista with touches of pink and gold; soon it will be time for a relaxing meal of seafood fresh from the bay. - T. K. |

I wish that every family could be as fortunate as mine has been in finding havens of beauty and tranquility.
The serene seaside village of Capitola, just north of Monterey has become a favorite weekend retreat for the Kinkade family. Recently, I set up my easel under a beach umbrella and began to paint the romantic expanse of sand and water and sky, drawing a crowd of curious
onlookers as I worked. The ancient wooden pier becomes the centerpiece of luminous ocean waters painted gold by the setting sun; Nanette and I have often joined the couples who love to stroll the pier, hand-in-hand, just at dusk.
As the brisk autumn afternoon faded slowly to evening, the setting sun touched the wispy clouds and the wave tossed sea with shades of gold and pink. Tidal pools become silvery mirrors reflecting the glory of this Capitola Sunset.
Charming Victorian homes line the hillside; rustic shacks perch atop the pier. The intriguing octagonal restaurant with its gleaming windows serves some tasty fare; indeed, my family dined in comfort that evening as I put the finishing touches on my plein-air celebration of our romantic Capitola Sunset hideaway. A dream is coming true as
work begins on Thomas Kinkade's Christmas Cottage, the first in a number of inspirational movies about my difficult boyhood. As I re-live what were, despite many hardships, golden years, I realize that God must have had a hand in some of our miraculous escapes. The home payments we scraped together, the injuries we barely avoided, the holidays we somehow managed to celebrate - these are my small dramas.
In the film, I'm at work, painting a study of Christmas Cottage, -- the radiantly lit, loving home that sheltered and supported the development of my character. We've decided to "sneak preview" the official Christmas Cottage print, as a special offer for my loyal collectors. - T. K. |

In Christmas Memories, first in my new series celebrating the joyous festivity of an earlier and more gracious era, one of California's great historic houses shows its festive holiday face. Colorful lights spill out from the huge Christmas tree, as tethered horses await the close of festivities. - T. K. |

A full moon on Christmas Eve is so very romantic; especially when the surprising radiance of moonlight reflects silver on a snow-filled landscape. In Christmas Moonlight, a brilliant full moon dances on the wispy clouds, paints a silver pathway over the pond, touches the snowy tree limbs with light, illuminates the walk and bridge with a welcoming glow, and bathes the roof of our solid stone retreat in a warm, milky white.
The scene is joyful and welcoming. I’ve draped the roof and eaves, even the bridge with festive Christmas lights. The graceful arch of the antique stone bridge and the foot path that glistens in the moonlight seem to invite the passer-by to stop by and sample the hospitality of the home. Golden light pours through big windows and smoke curls up from the chimney; the cozy comfort of the family life lived within offers a welcome refuge from the cold, crisp Christmas Eve.
In Christmas Moonlight man and nature work together to confirm the warm, inviting, generous mood of Christmas Eve. Distant barns remind us of God’s bounty. The silence is pervasive… wait, is that Santa’s sleigh we hear in the distance? |

When I think of the glory of Christmas, I think of the radiant sunsets that set the snowy world aglow at that time of year. The luminous golden color of the sunset in Christmas Tree Cottage is a vibrant reminder that the glory of the season truly comes from God alone. - T. K. |

As I think back, many elements of an earlier and simpler time survived in my boyhood hometown. It was common, back then, for riders to navigate the unpaved roads on horseback. Rustic scenes like this, where horses wait patiently at a split rail fence, while their riders enjoy holiday festivities in a rustic stone cottage, are treasured memories. I can almost smell the fragrant wood smoke rising in wisps from the twin chimneys. - T. K. |

Clearing Storms, is to me, a symbolic scene, charged with a joyous message. Storms - dark, brooding terrifying - are a part of our lives. When we're in the grip of a storm, we may feel abandoned by God. The meaning of Clearing Storms is that God's love is eternal. - T. K. |

There are inspiring places I return to time and again. The English Cotswolds of the Cobblestone Lane series are one such favorite destination. Throughout the series, I've imagined that our journey would end at just such a destination as we discover in Cobblestone Evening . We've come full circle with this classic English village; fittingly, our ramble ends at just that breathless hour when the plump trout are biting in the brook, and stillness wraps the land in a fleecy blanket of perfect peace. Cobblestone Evening ends one journey, but promises others. - T. K. |

I've found that there are many quaint pathways in my mind, leading me to pleasing vistas. Cobblestone Lane I, the newest of the country lanes that I intend to follow in a print series, winds its way through a rustic village. The very unevenness of the cobbled path adds a sense of adventure that awakens all our senses; we hear birdsong, feel the bracing mist of morning, pluck a ripe apple to savor its sweet juice, smell the mingles scents, enjoy the play of sunlight and shade. - T.
