In the summer of 1991, I visited Baffin Island, west of Greenland in Canada’s Northwest Territories. I traveled with Inuit guides to Cumberland Sound - an arm of the sea reaching in to the southeastern part of Baffin. Polar bears had recently been sighted there hunting walrus. The sky glowed pink and gold. We followed the shoreline, with its slabs of broken ice, in our boat, a "Winnipeg Jet." Near the water, I noticed a large, flat tablet of ice which was cracked through the center. Was the crack made by the weight of a polar bear conducting its shore patrol on Cumberland Sound? - T. I.

Strong backlighting becomes a design element in many of my paintings. The white swan tends to reflect the color and light of its surrounding habitat. The backlighting serves to further "pop" the bird out of the background. I found it exciting to try to capture the light filtering through the wing feathers of the swan and to repeat that light in the sparkles on the water. Once common, the trumpeter swan is now rare over much of its range. This swan is, however, slowly making a comeback, partially due to reintroduction to old breeding grounds. - T. I.

One of the ways to recharge my batteries as an artist is to take a trip. So, one spring, a friend and I planned a trip to Costa Rica and Guatemala. Spring in Central America offers great variety of wildlife and a fairly minimal amount of rain. The trip was fantastic. I viewed hundreds of species of plants and animals. I especially loved seeing and exploring ancient Mayan temples. Of the birds I viewed, the keel-billed toucan just begged to be painted. The colors in the bill were amazing. To show off the toucan and the cecropia, a jungle tree often visited by toucans and other birds, I chose a minimal background of jungle greens and Mayan mist. - T.I.
