David Shepherd - Indian Siesta

It was at a place called Tiger Haven that I saw my first tiger in the wild; one of the most thrilling experiences of my life.

In this little pocket-sized eighty square mile remnant of virgin indigenous forest, eight tigers lived. I wonder if they are all there now. There was pressure on all sides -- villagers wood-cutting, cattle grazing -- and all the tigers, as indeed was the forest, were under threat from the insatiable greed of man. However, I had four days in this lovely place and I felt at peace with the world, for here nature was supreme.

A beautiful cool stream ran near the farmhouse and I spent a whole afternoon sitting on the bank just watching; several chital, those beautiful Indian deer with russet red coats and white sppots, came down to drink. This was real tiger country. I knew they were around that afternoon. One young male had been lying on the mud close to the water, in the cool shade and dappled sunlight under the trees.

Long may such a place remain undisturbed.
