Buteo hawks, such as red-tails, normally hunt by soaring in open country watching for their prey, but they often like to sit in a place where they can clearly see in all directions. Forest trees are actually not as good as the installations of man for this purpose. Fence posts are popular and so are power and telephone poles. I placed this one on a traditional pole with the glass insulator. In this day and age, even older manufactured goods such as the glass insulator are fast disappearing, and these insulators are now considered collectable nostalgia. - RB
