For those of you who have no imagination, these little characters might appear as if they are just stuffed animals sitting on a toy train. For me though, they are real and full of life, aboard a charging locomotive, with the wind in their faces, courageously speeding downhill toward a wonderful adventure. - Jim Daly

The Big Moment

the big moment paper 1500
signed and numbered
15" x 20" $125
The concept of this painting came together for me while in Cheyenne, Wyoming, at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. When I saw Elizabeth and William, the children of artist Wayne Blaize and his wife, Ellen, I knew I wanted to paint them. As we were talking, rodeo clown/bullfighter Bob Romer, whose nickname is "Bulldancer," came over, and the combination was irresistible to me. I wanted to show the tenderness, compassion and goodheartedness of this tough, courageous and rugged bullfighter. He knows very well that this is a big moment for the little boy. He takes his hand to show him everything is OK. - Jim Daly

Catch of My Dreams

catch of my dreams paper 4500

Most of the paintings that I make are just me reliving my own childhood experiences. Catch of My Dreams is an incident that actually happened when I was a young boy. Unfortunately, my catch got away from me, and I’ve never been able to convince anyone that it really happened. - Jim Daly

Childhood Friends

childhood friends paper 950

Friends change over the years. As a kid, I would grow close to someone, and we would become best of friends, but, as always, time would pass, and one of us would move away. Some of my special friends were the dogs and cats that came in and out of my life and became part of our family. The depth of their love, faithfulness and companionship cannot be measured. My old friends are always with me in my memories, and I think about them often. - J. D.

Contentment

What most excites me about this little scene is the light coming through the window and the way it falls across the little girls apron and on her hair. This scene it also a picture of contentment. Most of us have had this experience of contentment. We try to hold on to it as long as we can, but it usually lasts only a moment, then it passes into our memories or is forgotten forever. - J. D.

Cozy Corner

cozy corner paper 2500

A patchwork blanket draped over a rocking chair, and teddy bears long since separated from a child who's now grown - these old things have a life of their own. They can't talk to you or walk around the room, but if you listen closely you can almost hear the silent voice of the person who once owned them. For me, these treasures are not portraits of what they appear to be, but instead, I've tried to paint a portrait of that unseen person who once cherished and loved them. - J. D.

Dominoes

The boys in my painting. Dominoes, are passing the time away on a warm summer day. Before the day is over, they will probably play a little ball and maybe even go for a swim. When thinking back to my childhood, my best memories are of the friendship and companionship of my brother, Clayne, and of the old gang. Friends sometimes drift apart as time goes by, but memories stay with us always. Memories themselves can be like old friends – old friends that we can visit anytime, no matter how far apart we are. - J.D.

Down by the Creek is a commission painting about the childhood experiences of the client. He and his two brothers spent many hours playing by the old creek; fishing, throwing rocks and just letting their imaginations run free. I tried to capture these memories for him - boys doing the things boys have done since time began. - J.D.

Favorite Gift

favorite gift paper 2500

We all have memories of a special holiday or Christmas. The little girl in my painting will always remember this Christmas and her favorite gift. The holidays are a wonderful time of the year. I love the sounds and the smells and the expressions on peoples’ faces. Everyone celebrates the holidays in their own way and in their own faith. It’s a time of forgiveness, a time to reflect and a time to be with the ones we love. - J.D.

Favorite Reader

When I was a boy, comic books were a big part of my life. Not only did I prefer reading them to doing homework, but saving and trading comic books with other kids was an important event. We moved around a lot, and there was no better icebreaker for a new kid than to appear with a fresh supply of comics. It was a great way to make friends. - J.D.

Flying High

flying high paper 950

11" x 13" email price request
I have tried to capture the moment when the evening breeze catches the tail of the kite and lifts if higher and higher, almost out of sight. The kite tugs for freedom, but the young boy keeps it firmly anchored in his hand. He concentrates on his task while his sister keeps track of the climbing kite. I wanted to involve the viewer in the painting by leaving the action of the kite to the viewer’s imagination. The simplicity of the landscape emphasizes the feeling of freedom while the dark shadows from the clouds create a feeling of mystery. - J.D.

The Flying Horse

Children always seen to love places where they can make believe and let their imaginations run free. I can still remember the excitement of the old carousels, especially the sound of the music and all those wonderful colors. As I mounted my horse, I would dream and pretend I was a cowboy. Others would dream of being a prince or a princess, and for a few minutes on the magic go-round, our dreams came true. - J.D.

We all remember a teacher from our childhood who gave us the gift of time and helped us when we needed it. As the years go by, we think of them and become aware of the precious gift they gave to us. We feel an emptiness inside because we want these teachers to know that they made a difference and that they affected our lives forever. But we never told them. My painting, A Gift of Time, is dedicated to all teachers who have given such a gift – my way of saying, "Thank you, thank you, thank you. - J.D.

Go Home

go home paper 950

11.5" x 8.5" email price request
When I was a boy, my dog would always try to follow me. Even though I loved him, there were times I didn't want him along. I'd yell loudly, 'Go home!' As I went down the road, I would look back over my shoulder and see him standing there, with his sad face. The more guilty I felt, the more downtrodden he would look. It always worked. I couldn't stand it. I would turn around and say, 'Okay, you can come along.'  I remember how his face would light up. He would come charging down the driveway with his mouth open, as if he were laughing at me, and off we would go, down the road together. - J.D.

Good Company

good company paper 1500

Everyone who has ever had a passion for cats knows that cats have an independent spirit. For me that's what their charm is - they always seem to be full of mystery and to be a little above us all, as if they know something that we don't. When I look into the eyes of a cat, I feel like it's looking into my soul. For some, that can be a little frightening; for others it can be a real closeness. The little girl in my painting is discovering that special closeness. She is enjoying the moment with her friend - a little girl and her cat just passing the time away. - J.D.

Her Secret Place

What a special time it is to escape to a private place where there are no intruders, a place where we can turn our backs to the world and be alone with our private thoughts. There, we can let our imagination dream and create the most beautiful fantasies. The little girl in my painting has found her secret place, and, no matter where she goes or how long she lives, it will always be there – within her. The secret place I speak of is within us all. - J.D.

Home Team - Zero

home team zero paper 1500

19" x 29" email price request
In the world of imagination, we can do anything or be anything we want. In my painting, Home Team: Zero, the home team is obviously not doing too well, and it seems that there is little hope. But the great thing about baseball – and life – is that the game is not over yet, and anything can happen if we just don’t give up. Who knows…the next batter may hit a home run – bases loaded, of course! - J.D.

Homemade

homemade paper 1500

The joy of creativity is that good feeling a person gets when he’s designed or made something with his own hands. It’s sad that progress sometimes means that when some things are gained, some things are also lost. I remember the special feeling of wearing the shirts that my mother made for me and my brother when we were kids. She got so much pleasure out of it, and her pleasure was our pleasure. It was wonderful because my mother put her time into it, and time is one of the most precious things we can give to someone. - J.D.

Honor and Allegiance

honor and allegiance paper 1500
signed and numbered
18" x 13.25" email price request
There is a special feeling, a special emotion that people feel for their country. It exists in all people, regardless of their ideology. There are times when these emotions overwhelm us with joy and pride. It is a good feeling. I wanted the simplicity of this painting to express the love I have for my country. I hope the viewer will see it in the expression on the boy’s face and in the discovery of the simple words on the blackboard. - J.D.

The Iceman

the ice man paper 1500
signed and numbered
19.25" x 25.5" email price request
By the late 1930’s, mechanical refrigeration had become commonplace, but many people, including my family, used the "ice box" throughout the 1940’s. Even though the motor-driven ice truck had replaced the horse-drawn ice wagon long before I was born, the ice man remained the same: tough, strong and always willing to chip off pieces of ice for neighborhood kids on a hot summer day. I hop my painting evokes feelings of serenity and peace. I wanted to capture these emotions in my world of canvas because they sometimes elude us in the world of reality. - J.D.

JIM DALY
Immigrant Spirit

the immigrant spirit paper 950
signed and numbered
11.5" x 8.5" email price request
At the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, a concessionaire who was selling ice cream ran out of cups. The concessionaire next to him was selling crisp, wafer-like pastry baked on a flat waffle iron. It was his idea to roll one of his wafers into a cornucopia, let it cool, and put a scoop of his neighbor’s ice cream into it. The idea was an immediate hit, and the "World’s Fair Cornucopia," or ice cream cone, was born. Both the concessionaires were immigrants, and in my painting, The Immigrant Spirit, I wanted to show that spirit of enterprise and innovation. This same spirit brought the immigrants through Ellis Island and carried them through their lives in the new land. - J.D.

In the Doghouse

in the doghouse paper 1500
signed and numbered
8.25" x 11.25" email price request
When I was a boy I was in the doghouse more than once, and I believed that all of my troubles would be over when I grew up. As an adult I sometimes want to forget that there was ever any pain or trouble when I was a child. Life’s problems, however, are with us always, and when they seem to be overwhelming and impossible to overcome, there is no way of measuring the unconditional love of a friend. - J.D.

It's That Time Again

it's that time again paper 1500
signed and numbered
19.5" x 14.5" email price request
Getting a hair cut, or getting your ears lowered as we used to call it, usually meant going to the barber shop; but when times were hard or you lived too far out in the country, a pair of scissors and a skilled mom or dad would do the job.  In this painting, it's that time again, and this little guy wants to make sure that his mom gets it exactly right.  When she's finished, he will have some hair down his back and will probably itch a little for the rest of the day. The closeness between a mother and her son is very special, and I wanted to show this emotion in my painting. - J.D.

Left Out

left out paper 1500

At one time or another in our lives, we’ve all had the feeling of being left out. Sometimes it’s all in fun, and sometimes it’s sad, but like the clouds in the background of the painting, the feeling always passes, the sun breaks through, and we’re part of the group again. - J.D.

Let's Play Ball

let's play ball paper 1500

Our dog "Satch" loved to chase the ball, and he never got tired of it. Whenever I had the blues or was down, it always cheered me up to throw the ball and watch his joy at retrieving it. "Satch" is gone now, and I throw the ball for our new dog, "Cody." My hopes are that the boy in this painting will take his socks off and throw the ball for his dog and that the joys of the summer day will return. - J.D.

The carefree days of youth-time spent fishing in creeks, skipping rocks, carving initials and playing with toy trucks and teddy bears. Jim Daly depicts little boys doing what they've done since time began in these nostalgic moments to enjoy for all time.
