Tom Browning grew up in the small, farming community of Ontario, Oregon, where, as a boy, he loved to draw horses, cowboys and Indians.
As a student, he experimented with a variety of media, before returning to oils, his preferred medium, which gave him the vibrant effects that he sought without the use of a lot of detail. "I am always striving for change, for improvement," he explains.
As an artist known for his Western and wildlife paintings, Browning's career took a new direction in 1984 when he began to paint women and children, timeless in appearance and evocative of special memories. Rather than emphasize specific details he instead chooses to paint features that are suggestive as to form, light and shade. "I'm not making a statement about the subject, but rather, I'm trying to get an effect. I want the painting to be convincing. Somehow, there is a certain emotional quality that comes across. I'm not conscious of it or trying to put it in, but I'm told it comes across."
With his palette of soft colors, he creates muted backgrounds and luminous skin tones. The paintings of Tom Browning draw us into their warmth - the warmth of those quiet moments shared by a mother and child. In one painting, a child at the seashore discovers the gentle caress of the waves on the warm sand for the first time. In another, a young mother reads to the baby on her lap. That emotional quality comes across in his portrait of a little girl, reading to her doll, and of a tiny, hesitant captain being encouraged by his mother to launch his first sailboat into the waves. The tender scenes Tom Browning paints glow with life and with love. |
