It is always mysterious when one sees an owl flying at night. One doesn't expect to see a bird flying in the dark. This is different in the north. There lives a completely white owl that hunts during the day. He is one of the few exceptions, together with the great gray owl. The white coat of the snowy owl makes his wonderful yellow eyes stand out. They look like amber set in silvery jewelry. - C. B.

Artists often prefer to paint male deer because of their massive and impressive antlers. But for Brenders, the captivating expression of a doe in autumn made for an irresistible subject.
“I have always been impressed and enchanted by the beautiful eyes of the female deer. The idea for this painting had been ripening in my mind for a long time. I just needed a good background.
“During a trip to Canada to study the autumn colors, I saw a curious white-tailed doe watching me nearby. The light was very soft and the moment so beautiful that I completely forgot about the rain and the cold weather. This encounter — the inspiration for this painting — left a very happy feeling in my heart for the rest of the day.” — C. B.

Yellowstone National Park is my favorite place in the U.S..  I never tire of watching the male elk herding the cows and keeping away the younger bulls.  I have often witnessed this scene, when on a hot Indian summer day, they prefer to stay in the water.  With his thick neck and enormous antlers, it is one of the most impressive scenes in nature when the male elk starts to bugle. - C. I wanted to play with light in this painting and with the element of camouflage in nature. Fawns have no odor and are very well camouflaged, which protects them against predators. When the painting was finished, I felt that the left side was begging for some action. I painted the red squirrel screeching at the fawns, which suggested to me the title "Broken Silence". - C. B.

Sometimes I am in the mood to just paint a big Cat's head, to enjoy the real feline expression. Such a painting can be smaller since the head of the cat is full in the image. Details are not necessary now, and an out of focus effect brings the cat closer to the viewer. - C. B.
